Focusing microparticles in microfludic channel using surface acoustic waves

Along the years, surface acoustic wave (SAW) has been integrated into lab-on-a-chip (LOC) microfluidic devices. SAWs were generated by meshing and zig-zag patterns of the interdigital transducers on a piezoelectric substrate. Standing surface acoustic waves (SSAW) are frequently used in microscale-l...

SAWs were generated by meshing and zig-zag patterns of the interdigital transducers on a piezoelectric substrate. Standing surface acoustic waves (SSAW) are frequently used in microscale-level manipulations of microparticles. Commonly, these manipulations of microparticles using SSAW to control their position are usually done in an open loop system. The drawbacks for such system lie on its accuracy and reliability to produce acceptable result. Moreover, compared to a closed-loop system, due to the absence of a feedback mechanism, such system is unable to remove the disturbances occurring from external sources which results in inaccuracies and unreliability. This report will discuss the manipulation of microparticles with the help of the SSAW and phase shifting of signal generator method to control their position in a closed loop-system. An image real time tracking software will be use as the feedback to identify errors from the output. Information obtained will be analyzed by the program code acting as the controller to make changes and adjustment to compensate for positioning errors.
