Summary: | Renewable Energy System is more common nowadays for the fact that global warming issues are getting more critical as time goes by. Therefore, there is an increase in the demands for renewable energy and one of the focus is the integration of renewable energy to the grid system as well as the energy storage within the system. This report presents the author’s valuable experience collaborating with ERI@N for Final Year Project (FYP) during the past 1 year for Bachelor (Hons) degree in School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering in NTU. Hybrid energy management for microgrids is presented below, which includes the study of hybrid energy storage and power electronic converters, selection of power converters, followed by setting up models of sub-system (such as battery, supercapacitor and power converter) and evaluating the overall system in MATLAB/Simulink environment. Solar PV source is used as the energy source, which will be connected to boost converter to increase the efficiency of the PV system. MPPT I&C method is used with the boost converter to maximize the output power of the PV source. A flyback converter is chosen to compare with a boost converter. Flyback converter can isolate the input and output to prevent any noise disturbance, supplying a stable and cleaner output. In fact, a real-life application such as phone charger makes use of flyback converter as the power converter for charging purposes. However, flyback converter is used for low power application, hence it is not suitable to incorporate with solar PV source for this project. A boost converter is selected for this project to boost system efficiency. |
