Summary: | Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) is a type of propeller commonly used as a form of propulsion for commercial ships across water bodies. It is estimated to be installed on 55% of the global fleet of 50,000 commercial ships and this number is expected to continue increasing. The CPP is a technology that has been used since 1932 with no major changes to its design or function. The purpose of this report is to provide a better understanding of the development of the propellers leading up to the CPP, properties of the CPP and suggestions for improvements to the design and manufacturing method of the CPP. The CPP will also be reviewed in this report, explaining how the CPP functions as well as the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing the CPP on commercial ships. Furthermore, the design methods such as Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and manufacturing methods like AM (also known as 3D printing) will be explored for potential methods of improvements for CPP. |
