Description
Summary:The aim of the project is to analyse the effect of Laser Surface Remelting on the surface of as-cast hypereutectic Al-40wt%Si. Laser Surface Remelting was performed on the sample. Various parameter combinations involving different laser power, scan rate, and overlap were used. The sample was prepared by pre-grinding before. It was also cut, grinded, mounted, and polished in preparation for subsequent analyses. Microstructure of sample was analysed using Optical Microscopy. Microhardness was tested using Vickers Hardness Test. The relationship between the microstructure and the microhardness was analysed and explained with current scientific understanding. Ideal process parameter with laser power of 668W and scan rate of 2000mm/min, a mean and median hardness increase of 42% and 48% was achieved with an standard deviation decrease of 65%. Areas in which more research is needed in the future are also highlighted.
