Dipole antennas are the most commonly used antenna structures with a wide variety of applications. From using multiple dipole elements to create an array, to being used to model more complex antenna structures such as patch antennas, dipole antennas are essential in the field of wireless communications due to their simplicity. In this report, the fundamental concepts for antenna analysis are discussed. Analysis topics include that of the radiation pattern of dipole antennas and how modifying specific parameters change the pattern shape. Array factors which enable multiple antenna elements to emulate a radiation pattern similar to that of a larger antenna structure will also be discussed, mainly focusing on linear and planar arrays. And a patch antenna radiation pattern simulated by using 2 dipole elements that provides a relatively accurate representation of an actual patch antenna. Using the formulas analysed from literature, a MATLAB code was developed to aid students in visualising the radiation pattern plots for antenna structures. The code can plot simple dipoles with varying parameters, linear and planar antenna arrays and a patch antenna radiation pattern using the concept of combining dipole antennas.
