Summary: | Personalisation and customisation through additive manufacturing has been made more accessible since Industry 4.0 was implemented. These technologies allow companies to create product families based on various platform architectures. The product families and platform architectures incorporated with sustainable product design and development will then be able to better cater to consumer needs. The objective of the project is to identify platform architecture for developing customized and sustainable family of products. The identification of platform architecture also takes into consideration consumer needs and requirements. This is done through the analysis of case studies on five different air stylers. Case studies on the five air stylers were presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of existing methodologies. In the case studies, the functions and relationships of air stylers were analysed through function structure and Design Structure Matrices (DSMs). In addition, the most sustainable air styler and component were also identified using six sustainability indicators. Based on the survey results, the case study demonstrated how the use of the same platform or component across all air stylers increases overall sustainability. Lastly, the most sustainable component was redesigned and then proposed for utilisation by all air styler manufacturers. |
