Testing of metallic specimens using "C" scan ultrasonic procedures to locate, size and determine shape of defects

“C” scan ultrasonic scan testing has not been widely used in the inspection of materials compared to other ultrasonic testing procedures such as “A” scan even though the “C” scan has a higher productivity as it is automated. This is due to the “C” scan being more complex to operate and less portable...

This is due to the “C” scan being more complex to operate and less portable to bring to the test site. One of the main concerns during the inspection of materials is the reliability of the results obtained. Hence, this project aims to assess the accuracy of ultrasonic “C” scan procedures in the inspection of defects. “C” scan ultrasonic testing will be performed on various machined defects and their results will be analysed. Weld defects will also be tested with the “C” scan as the inspection of welds is one of the most common application of ultrasonic testing. The results of the weld defects will be evaluated base on its accuracy as well as how noticeably distinct the “C” scan images of different types of weld defects are.
