Summary: | Since the 1960s, containerisation has revolutionised the way goods are transported globally. The container industry has observed numerous changes over the years in response to rising demand for faster and better services as well as changing operational landscape. Living in the Information Age, new technologies are increasingly being incorporated into vessel and port operations. There is an impertinent need for stakeholders of the container industry to be aware of the new technologies and trends, and how they can be utilised to improve operational efficiency and productivity, which will consequently impact the future of containerisation shipping and trade. Thus, this paper will assess the impacts of upcoming technologies on the container industry, with focus on modifications to vessel design and port operations. Commercial factors that will alter the operational landscape of the container industry and trade patterns will also be analysed. Questionnaires will be used to gather insights from industry professionals to provide a more holistic assessment of the impacts of these technologies and factors identified, and thereupon determine the outlook of the Intra-Asia container market in the next 10 years. |
