Description
Summary:Over the years, there is a peak in demand for railroad transportation. The increased usage of high-speed trains results in demand for shorter inspection intervals and an increased in stress exposure to train parts such as the train axles. It is of paramount that the train axle inspection techniques to be fast and accurate. The failure of an axle can lead to potential derailment of the train. Train derailment can inflict damages such as loss of lives, properties and incur large repair cost. The main challenge of this research is to explore and develop ultrasonic inspection techniques to prevent such failures. One of the most commonly used technique is the Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT). In this project, the focus will be on the application of PAUT on train axles and the development of PAUT prototype which facilitates automation. Probe holder for PAUT automation will be fabricated and subjected to a series of experiments. Experiments will use PAUT techniques to identify target defects on the train axle where the effectiveness of the probe holder will be validated. It is important that there should be a continuation of the developments in PAUT techniques. This is to further the technological advancement in the railroad transportation industry and increase capacities of meeting future demands.
