The pragmatic and “me-first” attitude of Singaporeans has resulted in self-concerned or ignorant attitudes in which people hardly look out for one another despite community. This is because we live in a competitive society where we are taught to put ourselves first. Acts of ungraciousness evoke negative feelings and emotions that results in us pitting against one another even though we are countrymen. However, it is important that we act with a civic mind as it helps the society function more smoothly and strengthens unity. On top of that, it makes our society more pleasant due to acts of goodwill, which generate positive feelings and emotions. Also, there is an ongoing culture of public shaming for acts of ungraciousness. As a result, many Singaporeans engage in gracious acts in fear of being publicly shamed rather than doing it purely out of goodwill. As such, this project aims to cultivate an intuitive sense of civic-mindedness among the young so that civic-mindedness is sincere and not forced. By cultivating this intuitive sense of civic-mindedness, acts of graciousness will likely become more natural and a part of our culture, which will help make our society more cohesive and united, and much more positive.
