| Summary: | This thesis aims to explore the relationship between shame and the individual through a series of speculative products, which aim to discuss and reveal the deep image- issues expressed in Singaporean society. Shame is a concept that resonates strongly in most Asian societies, not just in Singapore. It is this shame, and the guilt that it generally accompanies, that shapes our social and cultural values, preventing abhorrent or negative behaviour from becoming a normality. However, Fear of shame and its consequence have spawned numerous negative traits and unwanted behaviours. They generally manifest themselves as hesitation or a resistance to rational choices as well as mental stress or fatigue, culminating in a more passive personality shift or trend towards more reclusive behaviour. Shell To Skin, Guise To Gown is a conceptual, narrative based product that aims to tell a story through its usage. The project seeks to critique and highlight the importance of recognizing and acknowledging personal shame, to inspire people to take on a more positive attitude towards embarrassment, and embrace their strengths and flaws in its totality, becoming more honest with themselves rather than hide behind facades. |
