Whether it is traffic junction, in-vehicle or speed cameras there is no way of avoiding the use of cameras in this intelligent transport system. These cameras are usually used in conjunction with automation for authorities to easily be notified when something is of concern and when these cameras are installed in a busy traffic junction, you will see more than one camera being installed. This is because a normal camera has a limited field of view and more cameras must be installed to cover the different angles required. In this project, we will be testing an omni-directional camera on a vision-based application written by Luo Yuefen that will help with vehicle registration plate recognition, vehicle detection and tracking. With minor modifications done on the application to fit the omni-directional camera’s requirements, the project will aim to discover this possibility of using an omni-directional camera instead of a normal camera and whether this is feasible. With this research we can discover more possibilities of using this omni-directional camera in other applications. With results obtained, this project could one day implement the omni-directional camera in other road traffic monitoring applications and give an anternative camera type to be used in suitable situations.
