Summary:Due to Singapore’s compact size, we have been facing land constraint issues over the decades. With little space and competing needs, it puts a limit as to how far we can further expand our road network. Therefore, the government and authorities have been actively encouraging the shift towards greener modes of transport to cut down on car ownership. Gradual success has been observed over the recent years as active mobility starts to gain popularity. As an increasing number of active mobility devices are seen on the streets today, there is a need to foster greater rider responsibility and encourage safe sharing of our paths and roads. It was reported that every week, about three accidents involving users of personal mobility devices occur on public paths and roads. This worrying incidence has prompted the government to come up with various initiatives and plans such as improvement to road infrastructure as well as more stringent rules to reduce cases of accidents occurring on footpaths and shared paths. No doubt the safety of cycling paths is important, but bicycle crossings should not be overlooked. Bicycle crossings can be considered the most critical component of our transport system as all road users come into play at these intersections. This report looks into the investigation of controlled bicycle crossings in Singapore. Junction crossings, mid-block crossings, overhead bridges, and underpasses will be studied. The effectiveness of these crossings will be analysed, and any possible mitigation measures will be proposed.
