Description
Summary:With the aging population in Singapore, the number of wheelchair users is set to grow. As such, even more people will be affected by the accessibility problems in the future. Although there have been some initiatives to improve accessibility, the challenges faced by wheelchair users in wayfinding still persist. Navigation has always been a challenge for wheelchair users due to the presence of obstacles such as steps and high kerbs, and these obstacles can be found nearly everywhere. Beside the presence of physical barriers, the lack of ready information about wheelchair accessible routes is another pressing issue. Although Google has recently rolled out a wheelchair accessible option, it is not available in Singapore and it is also not suitable for indoor navigation. Therefore, the objective of this project is to develop a mobile application that is dedicated to assist wheelchair users in wayfinding. This includes the provision of a crowdsourcing platform to build a database of wheelchair accessibility information as well as a real-time augmented reality-based wayfinding solution.
