Description
Summary:Honeycomb sandwich core structures are generally well known for its light weight potential, high stiffness and high strength to weight ratio which are important for acoustic, aerospace, automotive and construction applications. There were a few proposed cellular designs to maximise the mechanical and acoustical properties to fit the desired product shapes, but in this study, zero Poisson’s ratio honeycomb was chosen, and a prototype consisting of aluminium and polyester was subsequently handcrafted. By using zero Poisson’s ratio honeycomb structure, it may relieve problems of fitting into “out of plane” structures into the desired product shape, allowing the honeycomb sandwich panels to wrap around 2D curved surfaces without geometric trimming and comprising mechanical properties. The honeycomb core prototype’s dimensions were decided based on literature review, to produce a sturdy structure suitable for aircraft interior and fuselage.
