As oppose to conventional manufacturing processes such as drilling and milling, additive manufacturing has its benefits in that it saves both time and resources such as material and money. Topology Optimisation is also a up and topic that has everyone intrigued. With Topology Optimisation, parts are able to be optimised such that with a set of loads and dimensional restrictions put in place, a part that is totally optimised can be fabricated with no wastage in terms of materials, cost and time. Combining AM and TO is the future of manufacturing as with TO, parts can be optimised to its best design and with the aid of AM, the complex designs that conventional manufacturing would not be able to produce is now possible. In this study, we aim to find the optimal fabricated landing gear of an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle(UAV). This was done by fabricating tensile, compression and shear coupons and testing them under ASTM standard of D3039, D0695 and D7078 respectively. The coupons were fabricated using Fused Filament Fabrication(FFF) of carbon fibre to look for the Ultimate Tensile stress, Ultimate Compression Stress and Ultimate Shear Stress of the material. The data was then input into the Ansys Mechanical Software to generate a Topologically Optimised part. The part was then fabricated using the same material and tested for its ability to withstand a static load of 90N and an impact of velocity 3feet/second. |
