Pie-crusting is a surgical technique involving performing incisions on ligaments to release the soft tissue of the muscle. This technique is primarily performed on the lateral collateral ligament. However, there is insufficient data on the effects of pie-crusting on the medial collateral ligament. In this study, the tensile properties of the medial collateral ligament are investigated. In previous final year project studies, grips were used directly during the tensile tests. This caused slippage to occur during the tests. In order to prevent slippage, a fixture was implemented to mount the specimens during tensile tests. Holes were drilled through the femur (thigh bone) and tibia (shin bone). The bones were tightened to the fixture with bolts and nuts. This prevents the specimen from slipping and twisting during the tensile test. From the tensile tests performed, the mean ultimate load and ultimate tensile strength of the medial collateral ligament obtained were 866.90 N and 44.17 MPa respectively. The stiffness and Young’s modulus of the medial collateral ligament obtained were 86.13 N/mm and 261.95 MPa respectively. |
