In cases where a stent may not be the ideal solution, a CABG procedure would be strongly recommended, commonly in patients with severe coronary heart diseases. CABG procedures are performed to provide alternate conduits for the heart to receive blood and vice versa, caused by narrowed or in worst case scenarios, blocked coronary arteries. Sutureless anastomotic devices are constantly being developed as a means to replace the conventional suturing method during the CABG procedure for several reasons: 1) complexity of conventional suturing procedure, 2) reduction of injuries inflicted to vessel walls from the suture needle, 3) rise in minimally invasive procedures and lastly 4) reduce the time needed to train surgeons for complex procedures. The project report covers the procedures, requirements and techniques for distal anastomosis, as well as existing sutureless devices currently on the market. With all the available information, three design concepts were drawn up and subsequently evaluated. The final Design Concept C was chosen through a rubric of criteria set.
