Description
Summary:The report takes an approach to study the performance of a newly developed compressor through a parametric study. Firstly, the report starts with a literature review which studies several different types or rotary compressors while addressing its advantages and limitations. Following that, five mathematical models which were used to predict the working characteristics of the compressor which were later used to evaluate the performance. The models being used are: 1) The geometrical model was used to calculate the volume of the compressor 2) Thermodynamics model was used to calculate pressure and temperature 3) Mass Flow model was used to calculate the mass flow entering and leaving the compressor 4) Dynamics model was used to calculate frictional forces due to vanes, rotors, and cylinder. 5) Power Loss model was used to calculate power lost due to friction From the parameters obtained by the mathematical model a parametric study was conducted, the report particularly focused on operating speed, working fluids, changes in discharge port diameters, cylinder diameter and rotor diameters to evaluate the changes in performance at different specifications. After the parametric study, it was found that the mechanical efficiency of the compressor increased when the rotor radius and the cylinder height was decreased while keeping the cylinder radius and maximum suction volume the same. It was also found that the mechanical efficiency of the compressor increased when the cylinder radius was decreased and the cylinder height was increased while keeping the rotor radius and maximum suction volume the same. The variation of the mechanical efficiency was studied with respect to various discharge port sizes and it was found that for the larger discharge port diameter the mechanical efficiency was higher. Finally using the working fluid R1234yf also showed an improvement in COP.
