Airspace complexity metrics using graph theory

Graph theory and complex network analysis has been hugely popular in the study of transportation systems. This popularity is not unwarranted due to 1) the fields’ good ability to explain the behavior of real-world networks and 2) the natural mapping between transportation systems and graphs/networks...

This popularity is not unwarranted due to 1) the fields’ good ability to explain the behavior of real-world networks and 2) the natural mapping between transportation systems and graphs/networks. In this study, the air route network in the Singapore airspace – an area with regional and global significance – and its traffic flows will be analyzed as a weighted complex network. Complex network analysis is chosen as it provides a good framework for understanding the properties and behavior of complex transportation systems such as air route networks. Such analyses can help inform decisions in the operation and maintenance of the Singapore airspace.
