Summary: | Inspired by the pioneering work of Arduengo et. al and Barth and Lawton, this thesis describes the synthetic strategies attempted and successfully utilised to synthesise novel corannulene-based imidazolium salts preceding N-heterocyclic carbenes. Amalgamation of the unique characteristics corannulene and well-known chemistry of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) may lead to a league of NHC ligands with three-dimensional stabilisation and extended aromatic π-conjugation. As compared to known planar polycylic aromatics (PAH)s, these properties provide a wider field in NHCs and thus, carbene chemistry as well. These favourable characteristics mentioned in this thesis may hopefully encourage organometallic chemists to consider studying the behaviour of corannulene-based NHCs because of the unprecedented chemistry corannulene has over any other known PAHs. |
