Summary: | Personal Data is collected by many organisations in many countries ranging from government agencies to free email services to ride hailing companies and social media networks. Although data collection is necessary and beneficial to users, the personal data collected has been misused. In a keynote address at a privacy conference in Brussels in October 2018, the CEO of Apple, Tim Cook highlighted the issue on how personal data collected from users is synthesized, traded and sold. The information obtained is “weaponized against us with military efficiency.” He views the impact on users as surveillance and unsettling and not to be sugarcoated. Possible remedies will be suggested to curb personal data misuse and data breaches will be discussed. |
