The Impact of Malicious Software: Role of Software Characteristics & Security Response of Developers/Anti-Virus Vendors. This research takes a multiple-case study approach to examine damage caused by seven prominent computer viruses, including mass mailing worms as well as exploits that target software vulnerabilities. Using cross-case analyses including pattern analysis, relationship analysis, and interrelationship analysis, we examine the links among virus characteristics, security response, and the damage caused by these viruses.
