We contrast the relative importance of environmental stress, measured by industry growth/decline, with organizational response, measured by asset and debt growth/decline. Firm effects dominate industry effects in explaining failure. Four distinctive business failure pathways based on firm and industry growth patterns are described. In particular, we conclude that debt-funded, forced-growth strategies create a high risk of failure regardless of industry growth rate. 1996-01-01T08:00:00Z text https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/lkcsb_research/3904 info:doi/10.1016/S0149-2063(96)90025-2 https://doi.org/10.1016/S0149-2063(96)90025-2 Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business eng Institutional Knowledge at Singapore Management University Strategic Management Industry Market Firms Determinants Munificence Performance Choice Risk Organizational Behavior and Theory Strategic Management Policy
