Disinformation has been present in modern history as part of the tool kit of PSYOPS for the military. Likewise, misinformation has been part of human history for a long time. Hoaxes, rumors, and urban legends—all of which can be classified as differing types of misinformation, although they are not commonly addressed as such—have been exploited by adversarial organizations for their own benefit. This study will propose a comprehensive taxonomy to tackle fake news, disinformation, and misinformation and assess the level of threat they pose to society. A comprehensive comparison with existing typologies will also be included. 2020-02-01T08:00:00Z text application/pdf https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/lkcsb_research/6544 info:doi/10.4018/978-1-7998-2543-2.ch005 https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/context/lkcsb_research/article/7543/viewcontent/An_Empirically_Supported_Taxonomy_of_Misinformation_av.pdf http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business eng Institutional Knowledge at Singapore Management University Fake news newspapers misinformation taxonomy Business and Corporate Communications Communication Communication Technology and New Media
