Summary:Technological innovation creates numerous opportunities for businesses, organizations, and societies. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and big data provide opportunities for developing self-controlling systems emulating human intelligence. In some instances, these systems surpass the performance of humans. The relationship of innovative technology with the law is an important underpinning factor that is often overlooked. Law may encourage innovation but may also inhibit its development and application by adopting stringent regulatory provisions and liability regimes. This article examines the legal and regulatory issues related to new technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, and big data.
