The Impact of Process Choice in High Maturity Environments: An Empirical Analysis

sg-smu-ink.sis_research-14572016-03-16T15:03:05Z The Impact of Process Choice in High Maturity Environments: An Empirical Analysis RAMASUBBU, Narayanasamy BALAN, Rajesh Krishna We present the results of a three year field study of the software development process choices made by project teams at two leading offshore vendors. In particular, we focus on the performance implications of project teams that chose to augment structured, plan-driven processes to implement the CMM level-5 Key Process Areas (KPAs) with agile methods. Our analysis of 112 software projects reveals that the decision to augment the firm-recommended, plan-driven approach with improvised, agile methods was significantly affected by the extent of client knowledge and involvement, newness of technology, and the project size. Furthermore this decision had a significant and mostly positive impact on project performance indicators such as reuse, rework, defect density, and productivity. 2009-05-01T07:00:00Z text application/pdf https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/sis_research/458 info:doi/10.1109/ICSE.2009.5070551 https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/context/sis_research/article/1457/viewcontent/ProcessChoiceHighMaturityEnviron_icse2009.pdf http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems eng Institutional Knowledge at Singapore Management University Software engineering distributed software engineering empirical analysis Software Engineering |
