Summary:In this paper we discuss the role for agents in medical informatics and review some current applications. The paper will be divided into four sections. Section 1 will briefly introduce current trends in agent technology research. Section 2 will present the motivation for using agent technology in the medical practice. Section 3 will review some current applications of agents in medical practice. For the sake of brevity, these applications will be divided into four areas namely, shared access to medical information, co-operative medical decision making, remote care delivery and medical training. Section 4 will contain the concluding remarks, highlight the advantages and limitations of using agents in medical practice and suggest possible areas for future research work.
