Summary:Recent issues that have arisen in empirical research on information systems (IS) and e-commerce have created the necessity for researchers to reevaluate their knowledge of how they approach applicable theoretical knowledge, research design approaches, and statistical analysis and other evaluative methods. This volume presents new research that reflects recent advances in empirical analysis for the IS and e-commerce context. Based on our experience organizing and attending a variety of recent conferences—the INFORMS Conference on IS and Technology, the International Conference on Information Systems, the Hawaii International Conference on Systems Science, and the International Conference on Electronic Commerce—it has become increasingly clear to us that IS and e-commerce researchers are especially in need of guidance on how to extract knowledge from large and nontraditional data sets. The situation that we increasingly face in our research is akin to what has happened previously in molecular biology and bioinformatics, where the research questions that are being asked have begun to reflect a whole new paradigm of scientific inquiry in the presence of truly large-scale data.
