Summary:Progress in storage, communication, compression and high quality input and output technologies have accelerated the development and deployment of Image Information Retrieval (IIR) systems. Document Image Management (DIM) systems are being marketed successfully. However, there are a number of other IIR systems that have as big if not bigger markets. In this chapter we discuss the issues related to such image retrieval systems, present the key technologies in image matching and retrieval, summarize some of the research carried out in this area, and list some of the products and applications.
