In this paper, we characterise challenges and opportunities for a country progressing towards entering the global software industry, focusing on Papua New Guinea (PNG). By hosting a Software Engineering workshop, we conducted a qualitative study by recording talks (n=3), employing a questionnaire (n=52), and administering an in-depth focus group session with local actors (n=5). Based on a thematic analysis, we identified challenges as barriers and opportunities for the PNG software engineering community. We also discuss the state of practices and how to make it inclusive for practitioners, researchers, and educators from both the local and global software engineering community. 2022-06-01T07:00:00Z text application/pdf https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/sis_research/8763 info:doi/10.1109/MS.2021.3098116 https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/context/sis_research/article/9766/viewcontent/png.pdf http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems eng Institutional Knowledge at Singapore Management University Software Conferences Software Engineering Government Economics Internet Tools Inclusion Emerging Society Software Engineering Databases and Information Systems Software Engineering |
