Description
Summary:The chapter overviews Singapore's IP system and assesses the role of intellectual property rights (IPR) protection in Singapore’s economic model. It explains the country’s position on IPR in the recent negotiations on free trade agreements (FTAs). Singapore’s IPR protection system has proved to be effective in boosting the country’s global competitiveness and supporting its moving up in the GVCs. Other ASEAN member states could learn from Singapore’s experience in IPR protection to support economic growth and transition by (i) establishing a strategy suitable for the industrial structure and the current position in the GVCs, (ii) aligning statutory laws with international rules and standards, and (iii) holding a clear and pragmatic vision in international trade negotiations balancing the local capability and the interests in the long-term competitiveness.
