Julius Kovesi was a Hungarian philosopher who initially studied at the University of Budapest under George Lukács. He fled communist Hungary after the Second World War, settled in Western Australia and took a First in Philosophy at the University of Western Australia. He did his postgraduate work at Balliol College, Oxford, where his advisor was J.L. Austin. After spells at Edinburgh University and the University of New England (New South Wales), he spent the rest of his career teaching and researching at the University of Western Australia until his untimely death in 1989. Kovesi’s most important contribution to philosophy and public discourse was his book Moral Notions (hereafter MN), the publication of which in 1967 was received with considerable fanfare.
