In light of recent scholarly critiques of studies that frame the early-modern period in terms of binary opposites, this article demonstrates that 1620s political culture is hard to define in such stark terms. Through a close reading of the events, characters, and outcomes of the election, this article also shows the importance of embedding local peculiarities into wider historiographical narratives of change, or continuity, and reveals the essential role of the urban middling sorts in shaping the political narratives of the Stuart period. 2017-01-01T08:00:00Z text application/pdf https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/soss_research/2647 info:doi/10.1177/0096144214566950 https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/context/soss_research/article/3904/viewcontent/0096144214566950.pdf http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Research Collection School of Social Sciences eng Institutional Knowledge at Singapore Management University Urban Politics Elections Religion Political culture History Political History
