Amid reports of risingintolerance against religious minorities, terrorism attacks, high-profileblasphemy cases and the growing political influence of hard-line Muslim groups,it is easy to take an alarmist stance and assume that Indonesia’s approximately225 million Muslims are heading down the path of puritanism. Indeed, evenseasoned analysts of Indonesia often forget that Indonesian Islam isheterogeneous, and that the everyday experiences of Muslims from differentsocio-cultural backgrounds are extremely diverse. This is why Hew Wai Weng’sand David Kloos’ respective books are much-needed additions to contemporaryscholarship on Islam in Indonesia. 2018-12-01T08:00:00Z text application/pdf https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/soss_research/2718 info:doi/10.1355/cs40-3n https://ink.library.smu.edu.sg/context/soss_research/article/3975/viewcontent/BkRev_BetterMuslimes_CSEA_2018_pp.pdf http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0/ Research Collection School of Social Sciences eng Institutional Knowledge at Singapore Management University Indonesia Islam piety religion Chinese identity Asian Studies Political Science
