Summary: | This research aims to study cantaloupe planting patterns and pesticides use, knowledge and understanding level of cantaloupe farmers toward pesticides using behavior and guidelines for changing pesticides using behavior among cantaloupe farmers in Doilor sub-district, Doilor district, Chiang Mai province. This study was a mixed methodology research, qualitative and quantitative research. Data were collected from cantaloupe farmers by using focus group discussion, in-depth interview and questionnaire. Contents and statistics were used to analyze.
The study has shown that there are two cantaloupe planting patterns, open and closed system. Cantaloupe farmers use both tree seedling and seed to grow cantaloupes. The findings of this study were; growing cantaloupe in open system used more amount of pesticides than in closed system, the pesticides use among the cantaloupe farmers were Thalonil, Ridomil, Apron85, Diten group of preventing fungus, Carbaryl and Dicrotophos group of preventing cucurbit beetles. Using pesticides not only harm pests but also harm farmers health and environment. The result of this study shows the majority of the farmers had knowledge and understanding in using pesticides at a high level and their behavior in using pesticides to spray was overall in high level. The results of this study can be used as a guideline for cantaloupe growers to change their behavior in using pesticides in these ways; 1) grow cantaloupes in greenhouse to reduce amount of pesticides use
2) government and non-government organizations should support budget to develop agro-tourism in the area 3) set community class and local curriculum – environment studied with cantaloupe farmers to raise awareness in using pesticides.
