Summary: | This study was conducted to identify and analyze nationalist ideology and underlying racist assumptions in Thai animated movies Khan Kluay I and II. This qualitative study will employ theories and concepts related to racism and nationalism to analyze both the verbal and non-verbal elements of the animated films Khan Kluay I and II. The study reveals that the nationalist and racist elements in the movies are implicitly conveyed through characterization, the use of color, and the use of songs in the movies.
The films were produced from a Thai’s point of view that idealizes Thai characters and demonizes the Burmese. In the films, Thai characters and landscapes are portrayed in colorful and bright tones while Burmese characters are in dark and dull tones. Moreover, the lyrics of songs in the movies foreground the prosperity of Siam and how the protagonist and other Thai heroes protect Siam bravely with their sacrifice and determination. These things aim to encourage Thai audience to be patriotic and proud of their nation. However, the negative depiction of the Burmese in the films
reiterates mainstream Thai perceptions of the Burmese that can lead to more biases, prejudices and hatred against Burma and its people.
It is hoped that the findings from this study will provide the readers with greater understanding of the representations of nationalism and racism in animated films. The study also aims to raise awareness of the hidden dangers of nationalist and racist elements in animated films for young audience. |
