Description
Summary:Appropriate anxiety management by using clinical nursing practice guidelines (CPGs) is beneficial in relieving anxiety among elderly patients before major surgery. The purpose of this operational research study was to evaluate the effectiveness of CPGs for knowledge provision implementation to reduce anxiety among elderly patients before a major operation at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital by following the process of guideline implementation of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO, 2012). The sample consisted of 30 elderly patients just before undergoing major surgery and 9 professional nurses. The study was conducted during May to July 2014. The CPGs for knowledge provision to reduce anxiety among elderly patients before a major operation, Chiang Rai Regional hospital developed by Ubolrat Chummano (2011) were used for this study. The instruments for data collection consisted of The Amsterdam Preoperative Anxiety and Information Scales (APAIS) and CPGs implementation satisfaction questionnaires to measure satisfaction of elderly patients and nurses. The data on the proportion of the elderly with different levels of anxiety CPGs implementation were compared by using McNemar’s statistics. Data on satisfaction of elderly patients and nurses on CPGs implementation were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results of this study revealed that: 1. The proportion of the elderly with different levels of anxiety after CPGs for knowledge provision to reduce anxiety implementation was lower than before at a significant level of p < .01. 2. All elderly patients (100%) were satisfied with knowledge provided based on the clinical nursing practice guidelines at high level. 3. Almost seventy eight percent of nurses (77.78 %) were highly satisfied with the clinical nursing practice guidelines implementation. The results of this study confirm the effectiveness of the clinical nursing practice guidelines implementation for knowledge provision to reduce anxiety among elderly patients before a major operation. Therefore these guidelines should be used to improve the quality of care for elderly patients before operation.
