Summary:The objectives of this study were to (1) determine economic and social situations of agricultural extension officers in Mae Hong Son province, (2) find the satisfaction level on work performance of the agricultural extension officers and (3) to study problems, difficulties and suggestions on agricultural extension work performance of the agricultural extension officers. The target group of the study was 30 agricultural extension officers in Mae Hong Son province. This study was mixed method study which included both quantitative and qualitative study and the study instruments for collecting data were questionnaires and in-depth interview form. For instance, the quantitative questionnaire was used with 30 agricultural extension officers and the interview form was used for in-depth information from 7 agricultural extension officers. The quantitative data was analyzed by descriptive statistics i.e. frequency, minimum, maximum, arithmetic mean and standard deviation, while the qualitative data was analyzed by content analysis. The study revealed that the agricultural extension officers included 53.33% male, 36.27 years of age at the average, 56.67% were agricultural extension academics and their average work duration was 10.60 years and they had work experience in Mae Hong Son province for 6.67 years. In addition, 80% of them graduated with bachelor degree or equal and their average income was 20,284 Baht per month which was the salary at 19,493 Baht per month. 53.33% of the officers were single and 83.33% of them were in debt. In term of work condition of the agricultural extension officers, 36.67% of them were responsible for 1,001-2,000 agricultural family, 93.33% of them transported to working area by motorcycle and 100% had Karen hill tribe population as their target group. The study on satisfaction toward agricultural work performance in Mae Hong Son was found that the agricultural extension officers were satisfied in their work performance for overall at the medium level. When the author divided the satisfaction to 8 aspects, it revealed that the agricultural extension officers were satisfied at the high level with personnel relation aspect and with work stability aspect. Meanwhile, the satisfaction at the medium level was work nature aspect, chain of command aspect, work environment, welfare and wage aspect, balancing work life and personal life aspect and advancement aspect. From the in-depth interview, the agricultural extension officers were very satisfied on personnel relationship. In term of problems and difficulties on agricultural work, it was found that overall the agricultural extension officers faced problems and difficulties in their work performance at the medium level. When considered for each problem and difficulty, it was found that they faced the problems and difficulties at the high level in term of physical aspect such as remote area and geographic variability, transportation and communication. Additionally, the aspects which the officers faced at the medium level were administrative budget, cooperation with other bodies, administration problem and health problem. From in-depth interview, the agricultural extension officers encountered problems and difficulties at the high level in terms of physical matter, transportation and communication. Finally, the suggestions from the agricultural extension officers were Department of Agricultural Extension should support the facilities for the officers or the Office to promote the agricultural extension. Also, the wage for the officers should be considered for the works in high land area which was different from plain area. Moreover, the government employees who worked in local area should be promoted to be government officers for their continuous work in agricultural extension.
