Summary: | Medication adherence is a common health problem in the elderly with stroke and requires suitable practice guidelines. Therefore this developmental study aimed to develop clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for promoting medication adherence among elderly with stroke at the Out Patient Department, Chiang Mai Neurological Hospital. The framework used to develop the guidelines based on the Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC, 1999). The CPGs was validated by 3 experts. The sample was selected by purposive sampling and consisted of 7 health care workers in a developmental team, 5 elderly with stroke, and 5 others health care workers who applied the CPGs. The study was conducted from November 2013 to September 2014. Data were collected using the questionnaire on feasibility in using CPGs for promoting medication adherence among elderly with stroke. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
The results of the study revealed:
1. Clinical practice guidelines for promoting medication adherence among elderly with stroke at the Out Patient Department, Chiang Mai Neurological Hospital consisted of 33 recommendations which divided into five components: 1) assessment of medication adherence, 2) promoting the medication adherence among elderly with stroke, 3) education for promoting the medication adherence among elderly, 4) continuation of care and communication, and 5) improving quality of care.
2. The developed clinical practice guidelines were feasible to implement for promoting the medication adherence among elderly with stroke at the Out Patient Department, Chiang Mai Neurological Hospital.
Therefore, the CPGs for promoting the medication adherence among elderly should be applied with elders with stroke at the Out Patient Department, Chiang Mai Neurological Hospital. |
