Summary: | Nurses’ creativity is a factor influencing quality of nursing care services. Identifying factors related to nurses’ creativity will help nurse administrators to be able to manage nursing organization more effectively. The purposes of this descriptive correlational research study were to examine the level of creativity and to identify factors related to creativity among nurses in university hospitals. The study sample comprised of 368 nurses working in university hospitals located in the northern region of Thailand. The research instruments consisted of: 1) Perception of Nurse Creativity Questionnaire, developed based on Guilford’s concept (1967) and reviewed literature by Suchada Phanitkrachang, Bunpitcha Chitpakdee, and Petsunee Thungjaroenkul and, 2) Factors Related to Nurses’ Creativity Questionnaire developed based on reviewed literature by Phanitkrachang, Chitpakdee, and Thungjaroenkul. Data were analyzed by using a computer package program. Statistics used for analysis were organized based on frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and Spearman’s rank-order correlation coefficient.
Research results revealed that:
1. Creativity among nurses was at a moderate level ( = 3.52, SD = 0.49). When considering each dimension, it was revealed that creativity dimensions of fluency and elaboration were at a high level ( = 3.70; SD = 0.57, = 3.76; SD = 0.57 respectively) while dimensions of originality and flexibility were at a moderate level ( = 3.13, SD = 0.64, = 3.67; SD = 0.57 respectively).
2. Personal factors of age and work experience were positively related to creativity with the significant level at .01 (r = .28 and .32 respectively). External person factors of autonomy, challenges of work, sufficient resources, organizational support, work group support and workload pressure were significantly positively related to creativity of nurses at .01 level (r = .61, .59, .61, .48, .51 and .41 respectively).
Results of this study can be used as the basic information for nursing administrators to enhance creativity among nurses of university hospitals, which can result in improving the quality of nursing care along with positive organizational outcomes. |
