Description
Summary:Nursing handover is an important process involving the transferal of patient information to ensure continuing care. The purpose of this developmental study was to improve the quality of nursing handover in a gynecology ward at Lampang Hospital using the FOCUS PDCA quality improvement process. The improvement process consisted of nine steps: find a process to improve; organize a team that knows the process; clarify current knowledge of the process; understand causes of process variation; select the process improvement; plan; do; check; and act to hold gains and to continue improvement (Deming as cited in McLaughlin & Kaluzny, 1999). The study population included eight registered nurses. The research instruments were an interview guideline and an observation checklist regarding the practice of nursing handover. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Results revealed that after the development, registered nurses could correctly and completely perform more than 75.00% of nursing handover processes. Problems of quality improvement included a long handover period and a lack of nursing handover preparation. Registered nurses were satisfied with the quality development process because of good and continuing patient care and a systematic nursing handover procedure. This study showed that using the FOCUS PDCA quality improvement process and SBAR method is an effective and useful method for improving nursing handover. Nursing administrators can use these methods to improve the quality of nursing handovers in other units.
