Femtosecond electron bunches, source and characterization

A femtosecond electron source has been developed at the Fast Neutron Research Facility (FNRF), Chiang Mai University, Thailand. So far, it has produced electron bunches as short as σz∼180 fs with (1-6)×108electrons per microbunch. The system consists of an RF-gun with a thermionic cathode, an alpha-...

The system consists of an RF-gun with a thermionic cathode, an alpha-magnet as a magnetic bunch compressor, and a linear accelerator as a post acceleration section. Coherent transition radiation emitted at wavelengths equal to and longer than the bunch length is used in a Michelson interferometer to determine the bunch length by autocorrelation technique. The experimental setup and results of the bunch length measurement are described. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
