Description
Summary:IP address distribution systems have been continuously developed to distribute IP address [1] more efficiently and conveniently. Currently, the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is the most widely used IP distribution system. DHCP was designed for working in local area network environment and has been improved in performance [3], security [4,5] and speed [6]. However, using DHCP in public area network [7] environment has several flaws. This paper proposes a method to improve the operations of DHCP to be able to work in public area network environment more efficiently and suitably [8]. The modifications are made on the server side, while the client side is kept unchanged from the original DHCP. The proposed modified-DHCP is called Dynamic Separated Host Configuration Protocol (DSHCP). The results show that DSHCP is more suitable for using in public area network environment and more flexible in grouping users and in implementing the policy for each group. By using DSHCP server for network management operations, managed switches are not required, therefore, DSHCP is an appropriate solution for small to medium organizations for working in public area network more securely.
