However, it has a longer history, with its genesis in 2002 as part of Chiang Mai University Journal. This journal was split into two in 2007, with the formation of ASR's predecessor, the Chiang Mai University Journal of social Sciences and Humanities, which was later restyled as ASR in 2014, and began publishing online in 2015. This paper is an ethnographic account of people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHIV) involved in a network of support and advocacy groups in post-socialist Lao PDR. Through negotiations with state, NGO and other local and transnational actors, these PLHIV seek access to medical treatment and social programs, de-stigmatization of their HIVpositive status and recognition of their human rights. They adopt and adapt activist identities and strategies to their unique local context in order to negotiate Lao cultural and political structures, using a set of tactics that shift between everyday forms of resistance and act ve dissent. The role of culure is conceptualized as both constrictive and productive, providing schemas that can be called upon or transposed in order to achieve a goal, thereby providing opportunities for strategic action. This paper then draws conclusions about the potential for an expanded civil society in Lao PDR. 2020-05-20T04:41:50Z 2020-05-20T04:41:50Z 2014 ASR: Chiang Mai University.Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities 1,1 (Jan-Dec 2014), p.1-19 2465-4329 http://cmuj.cmu.ac.th/uploads/asr_journal_list_index/135819656.pdf http://cmuir.cmu.ac.th/jspui/handle/6653943832/68639 Eng Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, Chiang Mai University
