Summary: | Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are a common infection among elderly in long-term care facilities. Nurses play an important role in caring for elderly in long-term care facilities. Nurses should have correct knowledge and practices in prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The purpose of this quasi-experimental study was to examine the effects of coaching on nurses’ knowledge and practice regarding urinary tract infection prevention in older people in long-term care facilities during October 2014 to January 2015. The sample was 16 professional nurses working in long-term care facilities. The research tools consisted of a demographic data questionnaire, a knowledge test, an observation form, a coaching plan, and a manual for prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired t-test, and Chi-square test.
After coaching, average knowledge scores on prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infection among nurses increased significantly from 13.25 to 19.63 (p < .001) and the proportion of correct practices on prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infection of nurses was statistical higher than the pre-coaching rising from 74.25 to 97.99 (p<.001).
The findings of this study suggest that coaching could enhance knowledge and practice skills in prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infection among nurses in the long-term care facilities. Application of coaching may improve knowledge and practices in prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infection among nurses in other long-term care facilities. |
