Summary: | Maternal functional status during postpartum is an important health outcome for first-time mothers. The purpose of this descriptive correlational research study was to explore anxiety, social support, and postpartum functional status among first-time mothers. The subjects were 102 first-time postpartum mothers during a 6-8 weeks period who received service at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital or Chiang Mai Health Promotion Hospital, from July to September 2014. The research instruments used were the State Anxiety Inventory Form Y by Spielberger (1983), translated into Thai by Nontasak, Aemsupasit and Thapinta (1995), the Mother Social Support Questionnaire developed by Sitthiboonma, Kantaruksa, and Supavititpatana (2014) and based on the social support concept by House (1981), and the Maternal Functional Status Questionnaire developed by Baosoung, Sansiriphun and Tiansawad (2014). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's product moment correlation.
Results of the study revealed that:
1. Most of first-time mothers (75.50%) had low state anxiety and the mean score of state anxiety was 36.89 (S.D. = 7.08).
2. Most of first-time mothers (91.20%) identified that the husband was the most supported person. A majority of first-time mothers (89.20%) had a high level of social support and the mean score of social support was 4.22 (S.D. = .57).
3. Most of first-time mothers (94.10%) had a high level of maternal functional status and the mean score of the maternal functional status was 3.31 (S.D. = .22).
4. Anxiety had a significant low negative correlation with maternal functional status among first-time mothers (r = -.23, p < .05).
5. Social support had a significant moderate positive correlation with maternal functional status among first-time mothers (r= .56, p < .01).
The findings from this study can be used as baseline data for planning nursing interventions to promote postpartum functional status among first-time mothers. |
