Summary: | The aim of this study is to detect the deception by thermal imaging utilizing the infrared camera. In this study, infrared camera was used to detect facial temperature change on the areas of interest (AOI) such as forehead, periorbital regions, nose and cheeks. There were 21 participants between the ages of 20 and 27 who attended in this experiment. Card test and Peak of Tension test (POT) were applied as questions to detect a peak of temperature change regarding deception in experiments. Afterwards, comparing results from the differences in facial temperature change between deception and truth telling. It was found that the temperature of facial areas of interest (AOI) tended to be increased and tended towards a maximum during lying. The temperature around the nose was higher than the temperature change around periorbital regions and cheeks, whereas there is little different temperature change on the area of forehead. The results indicate that thermal imaging technique can detect deception. Besides, the area that found the maximum change of temperature is the nose. This finding is supported by the theory of “Pinocchio Effect”. That is to say, your nose temperature rises when you lie. Furthermore, thermal imaging technique can pay an increasingly important role in polygraph testing as an additional scoring channel to increase the accuracy and reliability of lie detection. |
