Summary: | Self-management among older persons with hypertension influences the ability to control the level of blood pressure. This correlational descriptive research aimed to explore health literacy,
self-management, and examine the association between health literacy and self-management among Thai Muslim older persons with hypertension. The participants of this study were 88 Islamic older persons with hypertension attended the health-promoting hospitals in Narathiwat province during January to February 2020. The research instruments used in data collection were the demographic and illness data recording form, the health literacy of older persons with hypertension questionnaire, and the self-management of Thai Muslim older persons with hypertension questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Person’s product-moment correlation.
The results indicated that the participants’ health literacy and self-management were at a moderate level. Health literacy was positively correlated with self-management at a moderate level with statistical significance of 0.01 (r = 0.469).
The results of this study can be used as basic information for nurses and health care professionals responsible for caring for Thai Muslim older persons with hypertension by enhancing health literacy to improve self-management. |
