Identities of Laotians in Luang Prabang and Lao Diasproa in Chiang Rai Province Performed in KhapThum Luang Prabang Traditional Songs

This qualitative study aimed to explore identities of Laotians in Luang Prabang and Lao diaspora in Chiang Rai province performed in Khab Thum Luang Prabang traditional songs. phenomenological research was employed to investigate the ethnic group maintaining Lao Luang Prabang identities in Baan Huay Luek which was utilized and presented to fight against or negotiate with the surrounding culture. This led to the maintenance of Lao Luang Prabang identities through Khab Thum Luang Prabang of Lao diaspora in Baan Huay Luek. Data related through Khab Thum Luang Prabang were gained from related books/documents and field survey (participatory observation). Then, it was analyzed to interpret the identity creation of the Lao diaspora through melody and lyric of Khab Thum Luang Prabang traditional songs. Results of the study revealed that the self-creation and existence of Lao identities in various forms was under the concept of new national state. The self-acceptance of the Lao diaspora was under the process of Thai making through the exploration of language and culture happened under the concept of the nation state stability and unity of the Lao diaspora. This led to the nostalgia creating the cultural rehabilitation process. The process of diaspora becoming of Laotians in Baan Huay Luek had important factors arised from the past political change in Laos P.D.R. The relationship tie between the Lao diaspora and Laotians in Luang Prabang througgh Khab Thum Luang Prabang traditional songs could conserve and maintain their identities as part of Laotian culture which can be used for fighting against their surrounding culture.
